Tying in my last blog into today's i want to speak on portrayal of gays in the media. I didn't touch base on In my opinion gays(men) and lesbians are negatively stereotyped in the media. They usually play the role as the flamboyant character or depressed ready to kill themselves. they are rarely portrayed as a realistic character. There is lack of social acceptance within the gay community in the media. It's funny how a reality show ca air with pretty young females, trying to sell themselves for TV time but as soon as they get an alcoholic beverage in their system their running wild. The show turns into a scene from girls gone wild; groping and kissing other females. If is was the other way around and a man was kissing and touching another man it would be top priority news the same evening, targeted as inappropriate to the publics eye. Homosexual roles in television and movies are confound to one type of role, addressing sexual orientation nothing more. Companies and networks down size portraying gays in the media for the fact they fear alienating or offending endorser's, and us as am audience. In a movie or sitcom the role of the homosexual tends to have a issue of coming out the closet to a relative, or friend; afraid of not being accepted. The heterosexual individual usually are homophobic and have a hard time dealing with their friend or family member living that lifestyle. For the fact they are portrayed in a negative manner in the media i think it causes society to look at it in the same way as a negative symbol which is unfair.
